I’ll be honest — nightly resets can be hard.
At the end of a long day, especially as a mom, the last thing I usually want to do is spend more time cleaning. By the time the kids are winding down, I’m tired and usually just want a little time to relax.
But even though I don’t always feel like doing a nightly reset, I can confidently say it is always worth it.
Over time, I’ve realized that taking a few minutes at night to reset the house helps me relax more at the end of the day and makes my mornings run significantly smoother.
Instead of waking up already feeling behind, I get to start fresh in a home that feels clean, organized, and ready for a new day.
And as a mom with young kids, that makes a huge difference.
Why I Prioritize a Nightly Reset
For me, the biggest benefit is simple:
I avoid stacking mess on top of mess.
If I skip my nightly reset, the next morning becomes immediately more stressful.
Instead of simply making breakfast, getting the kids ready, and starting our day, I now have to do all of that while also cleaning up yesterday’s mess.
That means I’m cooking breakfast in a messy kitchen, working around clutter, and feeling behind before the day even begins.
Taking just a few minutes at night helps prevent that.
And honestly, there’s something really nice about finally sitting down at the end of the night in a clean home.
The Areas I Always Reset Every Night
I don’t deep clean every night.
I focus on the spaces that we use the most throughout the day.
For our family, those are:
1. The Kitchen (Non-Negotiable)
The kitchen is one of my biggest priorities because I’m constantly in there throughout the day preparing three meals plus snacks.
Trying to work in a cluttered kitchen feels overwhelming.
Every night I make sure to:
- Put everything away after dinner
- Wash dishes
- Start the dishwasher
- Wipe down surfaces
- Reset the kitchen for the morning
Starting the day with a clean kitchen immediately makes mornings feel easier.
2. The Living Room
Our living room is where we spend most of our family time.
This is where the kids play, where toys seem to multiply somehow, and where random mess tends to build up throughout the day.
Each night I:
- Pick up toys
- Throw away any trash (especially random paper scraps my kids seem to create everywhere)
- Fold blankets
- Vacuum the carpet
Because this is our main family space, I love waking up and seeing it clean.
3. The Kids’ Room
I like resetting the kids’ room each night so everything is back in its place before the next day begins.
This usually includes:
- Putting toys away
- Straightening up the room
- Putting things back where they belong
Nothing complicated — just enough to reset the space.
How Long Does It Actually Take?
Realistically?
It depends entirely on the day we had.
On easier days, the whole reset can take around 10 minutes.
On messier days, maybe closer to 20 minutes.
The dishes usually take the longest.
If I ignore dishes for a minute, I could probably reset everything else in about 5–10 minutes.
And that feels completely manageable.
Products I Use During My Nightly Reset
Over time I’ve found that having a few reliable products I genuinely love makes cleaning faster and helps me stick to my reset routine consistently.
These are a few products I regularly use during my nightly reset routine:
- Force of Nature cleaner for counters, toys, and everyday cleaning
- Truly Free dish soap
- Truly Free dishwasher detergent
- My Bissell vacuum for our carpet
- Toy baskets to quickly organize the kids’ toys
One Thing I Usually Don’t Do at Night
One thing I usually skip?
Laundry.
I don’t like leaving clothes sitting in the dryer overnight because I hate dealing with wrinkles the next day.
The only exception is towels or blankets since I can leave those overnight without worrying about them.
How I Feel After Finishing
Every single time I finish a nightly reset, I feel accomplished.
Not because I love cleaning…
But because I followed through even when I didn’t feel like doing it.
I get to relax in a clean home.
I wake up to a peaceful space.
And I can start the next day feeling prepared instead of overwhelmed.
And for me, that small amount of effort is always worth it.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by constant mess and busy family life, try spending just 5–10 minutes resetting your home tonight.
Future you will thank you.
